End of the world to start in Geneva ;)

Scientists look at a computer screen at the control centre of the CERN in Geneva...“Scientists look at a computer screen at the control centre of the CERN in Geneva September 10, 2008. Scientists at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) started up a huge particle-smashing machine on Wednesday, aiming to re-enact the conditions of the “Big Bang” that created the universe.” (Fabrice Coffrini/Pool/Reuters)

When I first read that it sounded like a bad idea. Now I know that it is probably fine but the thought of recreating the “Big Bang” sounds kind of catastrophic. Ok, let us assume that these very very bright physicists know exactly what they are doing and that everything is safe. It is just a re-enactment of the conditions…not of the “Big Bang” itself. That is what I told myself after reading the paragraph. Then clicked on the article and continued to read. I was stopped at the edge of the screen with this quote from Evens, “This is a machine of enormous complexity. Things can go wrong at any time.” Ouch. Then he said that “he expected scientists would be able to conduct collisions for their experiments “within a few months.” So when do you think the end of the universe will be? 😀 ((Please note that this is filed under ‘fun’ and that I really do think that the CERN research is just great.))
