Impressive is the quote saying that there will not be peace until, “the colour of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes.”
Everywhere I go in the world there is prejudice. My family sat around the table and listed 16 or so countries where we have visited. All of them have strong prejudices. I have met people who have fled their countries, who have even mailed themselves in crates out of their countries just to save their lives. It is not just the color of a person’s skin but their culture, their way of dress, and much more that cause others to judge them as less valuable, less human.
In an interview Billy Graham was asked what was the most devastating sin. I thought he was going to say any one of the “seven deadly sins” but no, he said prejudice.
I was struck this week when I read the following from the NET Bible in the Book of James:
2:1 My brothers and sisters, do not show prejudice if you possess faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.
2:9 But if you show prejudice, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as violators.
James was not addressing racial prejudice but economic or social prejudice. There are, of course, many forms. May God help us to truly possess faith in Jesus Christ..
